Geology and Wine 14. Terroir of Historic Wollersheim Winery, Lake Wisconsin American Viticultural Area

Manager Snejana Karakis wrote the article Geology and Wine 14. Terroir of Historic Wollersheim Winery, Lake Wisconsin American Viticultural Area – published in the December 2016 edition of Geoscience Canada – that explores the setting in which historic Wollersheim Winery wine is produced, including soil, topography and climate, to understand how environmental factors influenced the character, quality and variability of Wollersheim wines.

Snejana and her co-authors also analyze the soil texture, chemistry, mineralogy and precision viticulture tools used in the region to characterize and observe adaptable vineyard landscapes, and acknowledge climate change impacts on grape varieties cultivated throughout the world. Such impacts have created new opportunities for Wisconsin to cultivate and introduce cool-climate European grape varieties alongside existing American and French-American hybrid varieties that dominate the local region.

Geoscience Canada explores the interaction of earth sciences and Canadian society, and presents new research through topical articles, editorials, book reviews, conference reports and letters to the editor.
